Silver Certificates

Silver Certificates

During the last century, many bills in circulation within the United Sates were Silver Certificates. They ranged in size from that of our current bills today to that of more than 30% larger and looked somewhat similar to the money we carry today but were redeemable by the U.S. government for actual silver coins.

It was not until 1963 that the first one-dollar Federal Reserve note was issued; this marked the switch from a commodity-based monetary system to a bank-debt money system.
This promise to pay in silver was visible on the top and bottom of these bills. In fine print, it clearly says “This certifies that there is on deposit in the Treasury of The United States of America One Dollar in silver payable to the bearer on demand.”
These Silver Certificates can no longer be redeemed for silver – the U.S. Treasury stopped exchanging them in 1968.
